Real Help for Homeless in Doncaster

Giving money away always feels good.

In fact, it’s the best part of what we do at CEO Sleepout. Especially when it’s in a town that has really pulled together to tackle homelessness the way Doncaster has.

In February, I was excited to give away cheques totalling a fantastic £185,257 from funds raised during CEO Sleepout events throughout the Autumn of 2019.

Doncaster was the very first of those events. We’d never been to the town before, and I was impressed with the way Doncaster Council’s Complex Lives team, lead by Pat Hagan worked closely with Changing Lives Charity to set up the Real Help Doncaster initiative – an alternative giving fund and campaign that enables people and local groups to apply for the money they need, whilst educating the public on homelessness, and why it’s better to funnel their money into funds like this, rather than giving cash to people who are on the street, or begging.

We agreed to donate a third of all funds raised at CEO Sleepout Doncaster to this forward-thinking local initiative.

I was also delighted to work with everyone at Club Doncaster and the Club Doncaster Foundation, who do incredible work within the community, using sport to inspire and educate people of all ages, creating pathways into education and employment. The team do an incredible job of keeping the community fit and healthy with Fit Rovers too – and really look after young people from deprived areas, giving them access to opportunities.

The whole club got behind the event. Special thanks to Club Doncaster boss Gavin Baldwin, Shaun Lockwood who heads up the Marketing department, and also to Kiwi Rugby legend Carl Hall who gave up their time, their beds, and made us feel welcome on that chilly night in October!

We raised a total of £17322, which was split 3 ways between the Club Doncaster Foundation, The Real Help Doncaster initiative via Changing Lives, and CEO Sleepout UK for our national fund and work advocating for responsible leadership in business to reduce inequality.

We’ll be coming back next October for CEO Sleepout Doncaster 2020 and I hope if you’re a business leader that you’ll get behind it and join us to make a stand against homelessness. Check out ceosleepoutuk.com/doncaster for more info.
